CALLED - Knowing Who God Says I Am

Primary Scriptures: 2 Corinthians 5:17-21, 1 Corinthians 1:1-9, Ephesians 1:3-14

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!" 2 Corinthians 5:17

One of the greatest battles we face isn't over our behaviour, it's over our identity.

The world is quick to define us by our past, our mistakes, our successes, our failures, or the labels others have placed on us and if we're not careful, we can begin to believe those labels ourselves.

But the Gospel tells a different story.

When Paul wrote to the church in Corinth, he wasn't writing to a perfect church. They struggled with division, immorality, pride and spiritual immaturity. Yet before addressing any of those issues, Paul reminded them who they were. He called them saints, people sanctified in Christ and set apart for God.

Why?

Because God doesn't begin with our failure. He begins with His grace.

God is not confused about our sin, nor is He confused about our identity.

Through Jesus, we are forgiven. Through Jesus, we are made new. Through Jesus, we are called sons and daughters of God.

This doesn't mean we no longer battle sin. It means sin no longer has the authority to define us. Our identity is no longer found in who we were, but in whose we are.

Transformation begins when we stop allowing our past to tell us who we are and start believing what God says about us.

In Christ you are;

A new creation. 

Chosen. 

Forgiven. 

Loved. 

Adopted into God's family. 

A saint. 

An ambassador for Christ.

These aren't aspirations, they're declarations of what God has already done through Jesus. Our behaviour doesn't create our identity, our identity in Christ shapes the way we live.

As we continue this journey through Transformed, may we learn to see ourselves through the eyes of our Heavenly Father and allow the Holy Spirit to shape our lives into the likeness of Jesus.

Reflection

1. Which labels from your past have you carried into your relationship with God?

2. Which biblical descriptions of your identity are hardest for you to believe?

3. Are you living from your old identity, or from the new identity Christ has given you?

This Week's Challenge

Read Ephesians 1 each day this week.

Underline every description of who God says you are in Christ. Let His truth become louder than the labels your past has tried to place on you.

Closing Thought

God doesn't ask you to become someone before He loves you. He loves you in Christ, calls you His own, and then faithfully transforms you into the person He created you to be.

Prayer

Father,

Thank You that my identity is not determined by my past, my failures, or my own efforts, but by the finished work of Jesus Christ.

Forgive me for believing voices that have spoken contrary to Your truth. Where shame has defined me, remind me of Your grace. Where fear has held me back, fill me with confidence in who You say I am.

Teach me to live as Your child. Continue transforming my heart through the work of Your Holy Spirit so that my life increasingly reflects the character of Jesus.

May I no longer be shaped by the labels of yesterday, but by the identity You have graciously given me today.

CHANGED - Being Transformed by The Holy Spirit

Primary Scriptures: 2 Corinthians 3:18, Romans 8:1-17, Galatians 5:16-25, Philippians 1:6

 

Supporting Scriptures: Ezekiel 36:26-27, John 15:1-8, Ephesians 4:22-24, Colossians 3:9-10 

One of the greatest questions Christians ask is: "If I'm a new creation, why do I still struggle?" 

You've experienced God's forgiveness, yet old habits still surface, fear still whispers and temptation still comes. Sometimes you wonder if you've really changed at all. 

The Bible gives us both honesty and hope. 

When we place our faith in Jesus, something incredible happens immediately. We are forgiven, adopted into God's family, made righteous through Christ, and declared a new creation. 

But while salvation happens in a moment, spiritual maturity is a lifelong journey. God never intended salvation to be the finish line, it’s the beginning of a transformed life. 

Paul brings to our attention in Philippians 1 who begins and finishes the work in us – God! The pressure really is off us, to a point… 

Our role is not to manufacture transformation but to continually surrender to the Holy Spirit, allowing Him to shape us into the likeness of Jesus. 

"And we all... are being transformed into His image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit." 2 Corinthians 3:18 

The phrase ‘being transformed’ is important… Transformation is ongoing.

 

In Galatians 5 Paul talks about ‘walking’ and it speaks of relationship… Every day we choose to trust Jesus, spend time in His Word, pray, forgive, obey and surrender, the Holy Spirit continues His work within us. 

 

There is no conversation of transformation that does not include fruit… and the evidence of transformation is not perfection, it’s fruit. 

Paul goes on in Gal 5 to describe the fruit of the Spirit… but why fruit and not achievements? 

Fruit isn't forced, it's produced, and transformation isn't about trying harder, it's about walking closer. As we abide in Him, transformation follows. 

Banning Liebscher (founder Jesus Culture) dropped this gem in his book 'Rooted: The Hidden Places Where God Develops You' that couldn't be left out… 

'Fruit means that when people taste your life, they taste Jesus...!' 

Lastly, many of us carry unnecessary shame because we believe we should have "arrived" by now, but Paul assures us… "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." Romans 8:1 

Don’t confuse conviction with condemnation… The Holy Spirit convicts us to draw us closer to Jesus. God is committed to your transformation, and He is patient with the process. 

Remind yourself of this declaration each day; 

I am not condemned 

The Holy Spirit is working within me 

I walk by the Spirit 

I am connected to Jesus 

I am not who I was, I am being renewed 

I am being Transformed! 

Jesus saves us in a moment. The Holy Spirit forms us over a lifetime. 

 

Reflection (from Sunday's message) 

Take a moment and ask yourself this question... Holy Spirit, what are You changing in me?' 

Not... "What should my husband change?" or "What should my wife change?" and not even "What should my church change?" 

But...  "What are You changing in me?" 

 

Sometimes we want God to change our circumstances before He changes our character, but God almost always works from the inside out. 

Before He changes nations... He changes people. 

Before He changes communities... He changes hearts. 

Before revival changes cities... The Holy Spirit transforms believers. 

 

Challenge 

3 questions to consider this week...

 

1. What still belongs to the old me? Is it: unforgiveness... pride... fear... anxiety... anger... comparison... insecurity... bitterness... selfish ambition… 

What is the Holy Spirit putting His finger on? 

  

2. What fruit is He trying to grow? Read Galatians 5:22-23 slowly: Love... Joy... Peace... Patience... Kindness... Goodness... Faithfulness... Gentleness... Self-control...  

Which one of these do you think the Holy Spirit is growing in your life right now? 

Is there one you have been resisting? 

  

3. What am I becoming? Read 2 Corinthians 3:18 again. "...being transformed into His image..." 

If somebody watched your life for the next twelve months... would they see you becoming more like Jesus? 

Not more religious... Not more opinionated... Not busier... 

More like Jesus. 

  

Application 

Don't try to fix everything this week... don't make twenty promises to God. Simply surrender one area. 

Write it down or hold it quietly before God. 

Holy Spirit, this week I surrender: my attitude... my words... my thoughts... my marriage... my fear... my unforgiveness... my pride... my future... or whatever He highlights. 

 

Prayer 

Holy Spirit, thank You that You don't leave us where You found us. 

Thank You that You don't simply forgive us - you transform us. 

Renew our minds. Shape our hearts. Produce Your fruit within us. 

Help us to become more like Jesus every single day.

SENT - Living From Your New Identity

Primary Scriptures: 2 Corinthians 5:17–20, John 20:21

 

Supporting Scriptures: Matthew 28:18–20, Acts 1:8, Matthew 5:13–16, Ephesians 2:10

Every follower asks this question eventually: "What is God's purpose for my life?" Many spend years searching as though it is hidden in the future. But Scripture reveals calling is not first about a career, it’s not a ministry position, or a platform, it’s not even a destination.

Calling begins with Jesus.

Once we know who we are in Christ... and we surrender to the transforming work of the Holy Spirit... God sends us to represent Him wherever we are.

The Gospel was never designed to stop with us but to move through us. God did not save us so we could one day go to Heaven, He saved us so His Kingdom could be revealed on earth through ordinary people filled with His Spirit.

Your salvation wasn't just for you.

The Gospel Doesn't End With You

"All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation." 2 Corinthians 5:18

First... God reconciles us.

Then... God gives us a ministry.

The order matters, we don't earn reconciliation by serving. We serve because we have been reconciled. The grace that rescued us now flows through us. The forgiveness we've received becomes forgiveness we extend and the hope we've found becomes hope we share.

The Gospel doesn't end with you, it moves through you.

God never intended Christians to become reservoirs of grace. He calls us to become rivers… Grace was always designed to flow.

Christ's Ambassadors

"We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making His appeal through us." 2 Corinthians 5:20

An ambassador represents one kingdom while living in another. They carry values, culture and authority of the one who sent them and that is how how Paul describes the Church.

We represent King Jesus.

At home, at work, at school, in business, on the sporting field, dinner table and in every ordinary place. People may never walk into a church but they will meet someone who belongs to Jesus. That someone is you.

 

Sent Like Jesus

Jesus said: "As the Father has sent Me, I am sending you." John 20:21

Jesus did not simply tell His disciples to admire His ministry, He invited them to continue it. Jesus entered broken places, noticed forgotten people, welcomed outsiders, healed the hurting, forgave sinners and proclaimed the Kingdom.

And now He says: "As the Father sent Me... I am sending you."

Mission is not reserved for missionaries, it belongs to every believer.

You are not waiting for your calling, you are already living it.

Your Mission Field Begins Where You Stand

It’s easy to imagine God's mission is somewhere far away, yet most of God's work happens in ordinary places. Your workplace, your family, neighbourhood, classroom, café, sporting club, community.

"We are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works..." Ephesians 2:10

Sometimes we ask God to send us somewhere significant, meanwhile God asks us to be faithful where we are. He has already placed people around you who need hope.

Your mission begins where your feet already are.

 

Empowered By The Holy Spirit

Jesus never expected us to fulfil His mission in our own strength.                                                                  Before the disciples went... they waited. Before they preached... they received.

Acts 1:8 says: "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be My witnesses."

Power - then purpose. Presence - then proclamation.

The same Holy Spirit who transforms our character also empowers our witness.

The Holy Spirit wasn't given for comfort, but for commission.

 

Light That Cannot Be Hidden

Jesus said: "You are the light of the world."

Not... "You might become light" or "Try harder to shine." He simply declared who His people are.

Light exists for one reason - to remove darkness. When we forgive... when we love sacrificially...  when we speak hope... and when we choose integrity... We shine.

People should encounter Jesus before they ever hear us preach.

 

The Church Is A Deployment Centre

Every Sunday we gather… we worship, we pray, we hear God's Word, and encourage one another, but gathering is never the finish line – it’s preparation.

The Church has never existed to hold meetings, but to carry Christ into the world.

Every Monday... The mission continues.

Reflection

Spend time reflecting on these questions.

1. Where has God already placed me? What relationships, workplaces, communities has God entrusted to you? Could these be your mission field?

2. Am I living as Christ's ambassador? If someone observed your actions this week, what would they learn about Jesus?

3. Where have I separated my faith from everyday life? Is Jesus welcome only on Sundays? Or is He Lord of your conversations, decisions, work and relationships?

4. Who has God placed on my heart? Is there one person who needs encouragement?

5. Am I available? Not perfect, not prepared, but willing. Can you honestly pray: "Here I am, Lord. Send me."

 

Application

Mission begins with obedience.

Each morning ask: "Holy Spirit, who do You want me to notice today?"

Listen - Be present - Ask questions - Care deeply - Serve…

Find one way to demonstrate God's love, remembering kindness often prepares hearts for truth.

Speak - When the opportunity comes - Share your story - Pray for someone - Invite - Encourage…

You don't need all the answers.

 

Weekly Challenge

Live Sent: For the next week, begin each morning praying, "Jesus, help me represent You well today."

Look for one opportunity to: Encourage, Pray, Serve, Share, Invite, Speak hope...

Each evening: Where did I see God at work today? Did I recognise my mission field? How did I represent Jesus?

Did I miss opportunities? What did the Holy Spirit teach me?

Remember mission is not about extraordinary moments, it’s about faithful obedience in ordinary places.

 

Prayer

Father, thank You for calling me by Your grace.

Thank You for making me a new creation through Jesus and for the daily work of the Holy Spirit in my life.

Today I choose to live as someone who has been sent. Open my eyes to the people around me and give me compassion for those who are hurting.

Give me courage to speak and wisdom to know when to listen. Help me represent Jesus with humility, integrity and love.

May my home reflect Your peace and my workplace reveal Your excellence.

May my conversations carry grace and my life point people to Christ.

Holy Spirit, empower me to be Your witness, not through my own strength but through Your presence within me.

Wherever You send me, I will go. Whatever You ask of me, I will obey.

May my life become an invitation for others to know Jesus.
