Why Did Jesus Call Ordinary Men?

Throughout our Revival Begins Here series we've discovered that the mission of Jesus did not end at the resurrection, it expanded through His people.

That mission wasn't entrusted to perfect people, it was entrusted to ordinary men and women whose lives had been transformed by an extraordinary Saviour. When Jesus called His first disciples, He wasn't simply inviting them to attend meetings, He was inviting them into a completely new way of living.

"Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." (Matt 4:19)

Jesus didn’t offer comfort, or convenience, or an easy life… He offered purpose, transformation and a mission worth giving everything for.

Jesus Called Men Into Something Bigger Than Themselves!

The fishermen who left their nets weren't looking for religion, they found purpose. Jesus gave ordinary men the opportunity to become part of God's redemption story and He still does today.

Jesus Called Men to Surrender

Jesus never lowered the standard to gain followers. He said: "Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny themselves, take up their cross daily and follow Me." (Luke 9:23)

The Kingdom has never been built by comfortable people, it has always been built by surrendered people. Because revival begins when surrendered hearts make room for the Holy Spirit.

Jesus Built Character Before Influence

Before Jesus sent the disciples, He walked with them, challenged them, corrected them, He encouraged and formed them. He understood that ministry flows from character.

The Holy Spirit doesn't simply give us gifts, He produces fruit. And strong men aren't simply gifted men, they are men who increasingly look like Jesus.

Jesus Trusted Men With Responsibility

Jesus believed ordinary people could carry an extraordinary mission. He entrusted His disciples with the Gospel, empowered them by the Holy Spirit and sent them into the world.

Acts 1:8 reminds us "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be My witnesses."

The Church has never been built by spectators, it has always been built by people who said yes to God's call.

Jesus Invested in Disciples, Not Just Crowds

Crowds came and went, but Jesus invested deeply in a few people who would eventually change the world.

His strategy wasn't popularity, it was multiplication. Disciples who made disciples, lives that influenced other lives. One generation commending God's works to another. (Ps 145:4)

What Does This Mean for Men Today?

Our families don't need perfect men, but surrendered men. Our workplaces don't simply need successful men, they need men of integrity. Our community doesn't need louder voices, but men whose lives reflect the character of Christ.

As husbands, fathers, sons, brothers, mentors and friends, God has entrusted us with influence and the question isn't whether we are leading, but rather ‘where’ we are leading people.

Will our lives point others towards Jesus? Will our homes become places where faith is lived out? Will our children see men who pray, forgive, serve and love well?

The Invitation

Jesus is still calling ordinary men, but not to comfort or to convenience, but to mission, to surrender and transformation, to disciple-making and to Kingdom legacy.

The mission of Jesus still expands through His people and for many families, revival will begin when one man simply says: "Jesus, my heart is open. Have it all."

Because revival doesn't begin somewhere else…

It begins here.

A 5-Day Devotional for Men

Introduction

Throughout this series we have discovered that revival begins when surrendered hearts make room for the Holy Spirit. As men, God has called us to more than attendance, He has called us to influence. Whether we are husbands, fathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, mentors, employers or employees, our lives shape the people around us every day.

The question is not whether we are leading, but ‘where’ we are leading.

This week, let's ask God to revive our hearts so that we can become the men He created us to be.

Day 1: Revival Begins With Me

"Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts." Psalm 139:23

One of the easiest things to do is identify what needs to change in everyone else and one of the hardest things to do is allow God to change us.

Before revival reached Jerusalem, the disciples first surrendered themselves to God.

Before we ask God to change our church, our family or our community, we must allow Him to work in us. Great men are not men without flaws, but those who remain teachable.

The strongest man in the room is often the one willing to say: "Lord, start with me."

What area of your life is God asking you to surrender today?

Lord, search my heart. Reveal anything that is not pleasing to You and help me become more like Jesus. Revival begins in me.

Day 2: Lead From the Front

"As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." Joshua 24:15

Joshua didn't say: "As for my wife..." or "As for my children..." or even "As for my church..."            

He began with himself.

"As for me."

Men often underestimate their influence, and it doesn’t go unnoticed…

Children notice, wives notice, friends & workmates notice…

People may not always follow what we say, but they often follow what we model. Leadership in God's Kingdom is not about position, it’s about example. Your family does not need a perfect man, they need a present man.

They also need a praying man, a faithful man and a man who consistently points them toward Jesus.

What example are you currently setting for those closest to you?

Father, help me lead by example. Let my life reflect Christ in my home, workplace and church.

Day 3: Strong Enough to Forgive

"Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." Ephesians 4:32

Many men were taught that strength means never showing weakness… Jesus demonstrated something different. True strength forgives, it reconciles and it lays down pride.

Some men are carrying offences from years ago, for some disappointment, and more than we know are carrying wounds nobody else knows about.

Revival cannot flourish in a heart filled with bitterness. Forgiveness does not excuse what happened, but it releases the burden to God.

One of the strongest things a man can do is choose grace when resentment feels easier.

Is there someone you need to forgive or seek reconciliation with?

Jesus, help me release every offence into Your hands. Give me the courage to forgive as You have forgiven me.

Day 4: Build What Will Outlive You

"One generation commends Your works to another; they tell of Your mighty acts." Psalm 145:4

Every man leaves a legacy, but the question is what kind. A legacy is more than possessions, more than achievements and success. A legacy is the spiritual influence we leave behind.

Long after people forget what we owned, they will remember how we lived.

Will our children remember a man who prayed? A man who loved his family?

A man who served his church? A man who followed Jesus?

The greatest investment we can make is in the next generation… and Revival becomes lasting when it is passed from one generation to another.

What legacy are you building right now?

Lord, help me build a life that points others toward You. May my faith influence future generations.

Day 5: Stand Up and Be Counted

"You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be My witnesses." Acts 1:8

Pentecost transformed ordinary men into courageous witnesses. Look at Peter who went from denying Jesus to boldly proclaiming Him. The Holy Spirit has not called men to sit on the sidelines. He has called us to stand up and be counted!

Our world needs men who are courageous, men who pray, who serve, men who worship and who lead with humility, men who are willing to say:

"I will not leave discipleship to someone else" 

"I will not leave prayer to someone else" 

"I will not leave leadership to someone else"

Revival begins when ordinary men fully surrender themselves to God. Imagine the impact if every man in Heart Church decided today:

"My home belongs to Jesus" 

"My family belongs to Jesus" 

"My future belongs to Jesus" 

"My life belongs to Jesus"

That is how churches change, it’s how communities change…

That is how revival begins.

Where is God calling you to step up and lead?

Holy Spirit, fill me afresh today. Give me courage to lead, humility to serve, and faith to follow wherever You lead. Let revival begin in me.

Challenge to the Men of Heart Church (and all Men!)

Men, the future of revival in our homes, our church and our community will not be carried by perfect men, it will be carried by surrendered men.

Men who pray, Men who repent, Men who forgive, Men who lead, Men who love and Men who make room for the Holy Spirit.

The mission of Jesus did not end at the resurrection; it expanded through His people.

The mission for you is to Stand up… & Be counted…

Revival begins here.

And for many families, it begins with us.

The Transformed Journey     • Called • Changed • Sent

Men of Faith. Men of Purpose. Men of Impact.

The world has no shortage of opinions about what a man should be; Be successful, be strong, be independent, provide, achieve, win…

Yet despite all the pressure to perform, many men quietly wrestle with a deeper question:

Who am I?

Before God asks a man to lead his family, build a business, raise children or influence his community, He first answers that question.

Throughout our Transformed series, we discovered that God doesn't begin with performance, He begins with identity.

Paul writes: "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation..."

(2 Corinthians 5:17)

Every transformed man begins here. Not defined by his failures or his past, or by what others expect of him and not even defined by his career or accomplishments.

He is first defined by Jesus.

A man who knows who he is in Christ no longer has to prove himself to the world. He leads from security rather than insecurity, from purpose rather than pressure, and from grace rather than fear.

But identity is only the beginning. God never intended men simply to receive salvation and remain unchanged.

The Holy Spirit is continually shaping our character, teaching us humility, patience, integrity and courage. He transforms the way we speak to our wives, the way we respond to disappointment, the way we raise our children, the way we conduct business and the way we serve others.

Real strength isn't found in control, it is found in surrender. The strongest men in Scripture were not those who relied on their own ability, they were men who depended on God.

As we often said throughout this series:

Jesus saves us in a moment. The Holy Spirit forms us over a lifetime.

Transformation is not weakness, it’s the evidence that God is still at work.

Then comes the final step... we are sent.

A transformed man understands that his influence extends far beyond Sunday mornings. His first ministry is often his own home. His children are watching, so too his wife and friends. Beyond this his workmates watch as well. Whether he realises it or not, every man is leading someone.

The question is not whether you have influence but more so what kind of influence you are having.

Paul reminds us: "We are therefore Christ's ambassadors..." (2 Corinthians 5:20)

That means every workplace becomes a mission field, every conversation becomes an opportunity, an act of integrity becomes a testimony and every decision either points people toward Jesus or away from Him.

God is looking for men who will lead with humility instead of ego, men who choose faith over fear, who value integrity above image, who are present with their families, men who pray, who forgive and who stand for truth with compassion...

Men who understand that the greatest legacy they will ever leave is not measured by possessions, promotions or popularity, but by the lives they influence for Christ.

Our communities do not simply need stronger men… They need transformed men.

Men who know who they are, men who are becoming more like Jesus every day, who are willing to go wherever God sends them.

Because when a man is transformed by Christ, his marriage changes, his parenting changes, his friendships change, so too his workplace and his church… And often, generations change.

Challenge

This week, ask yourself three simple questions:

Called : Am I finding my identity in Christ or in what I achieve?

Changed : Where is the Holy Spirit inviting me to grow in character?

Sent : How can I intentionally represent Jesus in my home,

workplace or community this week?

Don't wait until you feel perfect, God has never looked for perfect men… He has always looked for surrendered men.

Men of Faith know who they are in Christ.

Men of Purpose allow the Holy Spirit to shape them.

Men of Impact live every day as ambassadors of Jesus.

That is the transformed life.
